The safety of flying has come into question due to recent incidents aboard airplanes. However, flying is still considered safe compared to other modes of transportation. Despite the attention these incidents have received, statistics show that flying is safer than driving. In the United States, there have been very few fatalities on commercial flights in the past decade. Private jets and general aviation have higher fatality rates. Rail travel is the second safest form of transportation. While there have been some near-misses on runways in recent years, the aviation industry continues to work on improving safety standards.
